Dr. Landwermeyer proudly participates in yearly medical missionary trips in Central America with Health Talents International.
"On June 2-9, you may have noticed I was out of the office. No, it wasn't another of my wonderful vacations that I love to talk about - I was a medical missionary in Guatemala! I have always dreamt of doing mission work in Central America, but I wanted my work to fully utilize my talents in women's healthcare. I was lead to Health Talents International through a colleague and I quickly realized it was exactly the opportunity I was looking for. This group periodically brings different surgical specialties, along with support staff to Monte Llano, Guatemala to operate on patients in need as identified by local Guatemalan physicians.
While we were in Guatemala, the Fuego Volcano erupted for the first time since 2015. Many lives were lost and people were missing, but luckily for our clinic we were 30 miles west of the eruption and had no idea anything was going on. The gynecology team was made up of 3 OB/Gyns and an OB/Gyn resident from the University of Tennessee. (That other UT) We performed 34 surgeries over 4 days in 2 operating rooms. Let me just tell you, my back was KILLING me. These weren't the robotic surgeries I have become accustomed to. This was all old school surgery - open abdominal and vaginal hysterectomies along with open ovarian surgeries and surgeries for pelvic organ prolapse. On Thursday, the gyn team even helped out the general surgery team by performing a couple of umbilical hernia repairs on MEN! I returned to the United States with a real perspective not only on the needs in the world but also just how extremely blessed we are here. I really felt like I made a big difference in the quality of life for women who would not normally have access to medical care. I plan to make this a yearly trip and hope to take some nurses and caregivers with me next year. - Dr. Landwermeyer"
